The water that enters a drinking water treatment plant usually contains organic compounds covering a wide range of molecular weight and polarity. A fraction of these organics have been shown to be potential health risks. Thus removal of these organics is a necessary step in the treatment of drinking water. The primary method, which has been utilized to remove these compounds, is absorption through the use of granular activated carbon (GAC) columns.
