Psycho-cultural dimensions of the Mindanao conflict: Its implication to national security

Annotation

Explores the psychological causes of the frustrations and anger of Muslims and Christians that have contributed to the conflict in Mindanao. It also determines whether the manner of how Muslim and Christians feel and behave toward each other has an impact on the Mindanao conflict. Results show that there is a discrepancy between value expectations and value capabilities among the Muslims in all the categories of the interpersonal values. The relative deprivation of interpersonal values is one of the causes of frustration and anger among the Muslims which over time lends to political violence, and hence, a demand for full autonomy or recession. The discrepancy between value expectations and value capabilities may be narrowed down through education and sustained personal interactions. Constrict this discrepancy and inability and there will be a constriction in the level of conflict in Mindanao.
