The Tausug are the dominant linguistic group inhabiting the Sulu Archipelago. Part of the Muslim grouping, their colorful history includes both sultanates and piracy. Tradition claims that the various song traditions developed as part of court life or as an activity of Islam. This preliminary report is based upon the materials gathered during a six month research project. Description of the song traditions and their uses will serve as an introduction to the little- known Music of the Tausug.
