This paper deals with the evolution of the sultanates from the pre-Islamic era to the rise of Islam in Mindanao with special emphasis on the role of Muhammad Sharif Kabungsuan in Mindanao. It also presents the genealogy of the Sultanate of Maguindanao and discusses the relations between Arab missionaries and Mindanao chieftains such as Tabunaway and Mamalu.
