Establishment of rattan genebank in Mindanao and expansion in Mt. Makiling

Annotation

The establishment of rattan genebank is being implemented in Mt. Makiling in Luzon and Malaybalay in Mindanao. Many species/varieties are collected and planted in the five-ha plantation in each genebank. The Mt. Makiling genebank plantation has planted 293 samples and different species. The samples composed of forty-one species and varieties, representing four genera, namely Calamus, Daemonorops, Korthalsia, and Plectocomia, are collected in various parts of the country. There are 407 samples outplanted representing twenty-four taxa at the Malaybalay Bukidnon Genebank located at the experimental Forests of ERDS. Studies on the growth of some species are also done. Growth performance of each taxa is assessed by measuring the height and diameter and counting the number of suckers produced, for the clump-forming type. The area is continuously maintained and protected from forest occupants.
