This paper describes traditional Muslim education (Madrashah) with its emphasis on transmitting Islamic doctrines and practices. It also cites problems encountered by Muslim students in Western-type schools found in rural and remote areas in the Philippines. To encourage integration and to provide adequate formal education especially to Muslims, the Mindanao State University is established in Southern Philippines, oversees educational programs in the Muslim regions, in coordination with the Department of Education.
