This chapter discusses the economic basis of Island Southeast Asia from the period 1400 to 1940 when the Islamic era of trade and commerce had been extensive and the archipelago became the central market where traders from the east and west came to trade. Special mention is made about the Tausugs of Sultanate of Sulu. Included as two maps of the Sulu empire in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
