Written in Cebuano, this exploratory philosophical essay identifies a key idiom that cuts across the ethics, aesthetics and epistemology of cockfighting in Mindanao. The keyword is "klaro" or better still "walay klaro". "Klaro" literally means "clear" but in this context, its semantic range covers the idea of the "good" or "efficient" cockfight and cockfighter. The good "sabungero" is one who bets high, for example, not because he is reckless but because he trusts the whole set up of the "sabungan" as a world in which he can be at home with. The good "sabungan" is one where there is inherent order and rule of law despite the outsider's impression of chaos and informality. The essay also offers an initial space analysis of the cockpit and arena where both social hierarchy and the ways by which it can negotiated are reflected in practice.
