Abstract:
Basilan working cycle. This is a selective felling system used in the Philippines where there are intensive extraction rates. In theory, all mature and overmature trees are selectively felled, and the forest is left for 35-45 years to recover. But this rule is rarely followed in practice (Hurst 1990). There is serious doubt whether this system can sustain production at roughly the level of initial utilization. Lamprecht (1989) reports that harvesting is about of 100-200 cubic meters, with a rotation period of 30-40 years, in Mindanao. In fact the practice seems to degenerate the stands, leaving rotten and poorly formed residual trees, and to cause considerable damage during the felling.
