Abstract / Excerpt:
This study sought to describe the social dimensions of the Muslim polygamous families in Mindanao, more specifically the areas of Region XI and XII. It included the socio demographic profile and focused on the perceptions and experiences of the wives and children of polygamous families. It made use of the descriptive research design using qualitative approach. The study specifically discusses the respondent's social dimension in terms of role, decision making and communication processes within the family. Using an in-depth interview, the study commenced that majority of women has a constructive perception on the practice of polygamy though at the same time recognizing the presence of tension and anxiety. In the case of the children, majority replied with pessimistic perceptions on polygamy. Their experiences suggested that often times they resort to resentment and some accounts of denial were also present. Moreover, the coping mechanisms of the wives and children when problems exist were also determined. It was evident in their responses that prayers and restitution towards religion were helpful for the wives. The children also added that peers and their siblings play an important role in helping them cope-up with such experiences. The voices of women and children have led the researches to realize that the Muslim polygamous families is in dire need of coordinated governmental policies that will help protect and cater to the interest of each individual. In addition, reinforcement of values especially to the children with the help of the society more specifically of the local religious leaders was necessary. Nonetheless, the study can serve as a benchmark to the legislator and other governmental and non-governmental institutions in drafting policies for the future legislation.
