Sexist language used in the one-week issue (January 7-13, 1996) of the two local newspapers in Davao City : Sun-star Davao, Peryodiko and the Mindanao Daily Mirror

Abstract / Excerpt:

Objectives: (1) To find out what are the sexist terms used in Sun-Star Davao Peryodiko and the Mindanao Daily Mirror; (2) enumerate the ways in which language is used as gender biased in the two local newspapers; (3) enumerate how frequent the sexist terms are used in the two local newspapers; and (4) find out which of the two local newspapers shows a higher usage of sexist language.

Methodology: The study employed the method of content analysis.

Conclusions: There were specific sexist terms constantly used such as chairman, with an equal amount of used in both local newspapers and had the highest frequency of 95. The study also discovered that there were categories in which language was used as gender biased. The most commonly used sexist language fall under the category of dismissing (ignoring) women with a total frequency of 28. Other sexist language fall under the categories of diminutive endings to male terms, defines women through their relationships with others, especially to male, and lastly, categorize both male and female with the words that described them.
