Pineapple (Ananas comosus) and papaya (Carica papaya) peels as enhancers for pomelo (Citrus maxima) peel biogas production with pig (Sus domestica) manure inoculum

Abstract / Excerpt:

This study focused on comparing the potential of pineapple and papaya peels as enhancers for the biogas production of pomelo peels with pig manure as the inoculum. There were three control set-ups, one for each fruit peel in various concentrations and combinations. There were three replicates for each set-up, making 36 set-ups all in all. The preliminary rotting period lasted for five days, while the fermentation period took 40 days to be completed. Biogas production was measured daily at around 6:00 pm through measuring the volume of the displaced liquid. At the end of the 40-day fermentation period, a flame test was conducted. All set-ups produced biogas, with the Control Pineapple set-up producing the most based on the volume of displaced liquid. The Control Pineapple set-up was also the only set-up to produce a blue flame, while three other set-ups produced a slightly blue flame, and the rest produced no blue flame at all. The Two-Way ANOVA was used to analyze the data further, and showed that there was no significant difference in the biogas production among the different set-ups. This suggests that although Control Pineapple produced the most amount of biogas based on displaced liquid, the differences between this set-up and the other control and experimental set-ups were not significant. Therefore, the better enhancer between pineapple and papaya peels cannot be determined.
