Larvicidal potency of neem (Azadirachta indica) seeds axtract at different stages of development against fourth instar aedes aegypti (Linnaeus) Larvae

Abstract / Excerpt:

Neem (Azadirachta indica) seeds, along with its other plant structures, are globally known for their biological activities. One of which isits larvicidal property that has been tested with varied species of insects, including dengue-carrying mosquitos. This can be a promising source of biological pesicides which can be used as an alternative for commercial pesticides. COnsequently, it may lessen the harmful effects to the environment. Azadirachta indica seed extracts from different stages of maturity, with different concentrations were tested for its larvicidal potency against the fourth instar larvae of Aedes aegypti. Here, ethanolic crude extract of Neem seeds were obtained using a rotary evaporator (Rota Vap). Formulations of 25%, 50%, 75% aqueous crude extract were treated to A. aegypti fourth instar larvae. A 100% mortality of A.aegypti larvae was onserved after 5-6 hours of exposure for all treatments. Univariate ANOVA statistically proved that the interaction of Neem seed age category and the concentration of ethanolic extracts has significant effect in killing Aedes aegypti larvae. The 75% concentration is the most effective for the 4-week old Neem seed extract. Whereas, the 8-week and 12-week old Neem seed extracts showed no significant difference in effectiveness among the other concentrations. These results suggest that a higher concentration than 75% of ethanolic extract may detect a significant level of effectiveness in killing Aedes aegypti larvae.
